“The quieter you are…

The more you hear.”

Silent Retreat

Overview

For Adults

Come to the Gilmont Silent Retreat. In these simple words, deep calls to deep, the lyrical voice of the psalmist captures an intimate eternal moment with God. This short simple phrase connects us with our desire to feel the waves and billows of God eternally wash over us.

We are living in the end of an era, all around us we see constant change and the accompanying chaos. We desperately need to absorb what is peaceful and sacred into the depths of our individual and collective soul. Embracing long moments of silence is fundamental to receiving peace and being in communion with God.

During the Silent Retreat, participants will be given space to create a spiritual connection with the living God in our midst. We will be provided with daily scripture readings, one-on-one time with a Spiritual Director, hands-on prayer exercises, and wide-open spaces of silence with God. Each participant has the freedom to decide how to engage the retreat schedule and how to spend the hours of their day.

Ultimately, the Silent Retreat at Camp Gilmont challenges participants to meditate on the question:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
What are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them? – Psalm 8:3-4 NRSV

More information

The retreat begins with a brief time of verbal sharing and setting intention for the retreat. Throughout the retreat, participants experience space for quiet and reflection along with space for creatively encountering God through optional, self guided prayer stations.  Silence is broken for scheduled scripture readings, and participants are given the option of meeting with a spiritual director for 30 minutes daily, if they would like to verbally process anything that is stirring that needs to be spoken to a trusted listener.

Your Encouragement

You are in charge of your own practice at the retreat.  You are encouraged to take this time to lean into the practice of silence and to avoid the temptation to fill the time with study, catching up on a good book, or whatever else might vie for your attention.

The retreat begins Sunday, February 11 with check in starting at 4 pm.

We will gather for dinner at 6 pm followed by a conversation around the rhythm of the retreat and our time together practicing silence in community. Participants will be invited to consider signing up for sessions with a spiritual director during this time as well. Following that conversation, we will enter into silence together.

The retreat ends Ash Wednesday, February 14.

We will gather for the worship following breakfast and then we will break silence during communion.
